Aspectos clínicos e radiográficos de caprino com megaesôfago Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva Júnior,L.C.; Arruda,L.C.P.; Silva,D.G.B.; Soares,F.A.P.; Borba Neto,A.V.; Leite,J.E.B.; Soares,P.C..
A seven month old female goat showed neck swelling, apathy, appetite and weight loss, restlessness, increased salivation, cough, and regurgitation episodes which occurred post feeding. The animal was evaluated through both clinical and radiographic examinations. Plain radiography was performed and contrasted X-ray was done using barium sulfate. For radiological examination, the lateral projection was used for analysis. The results showed a radiopaque content in the esophageal lumen dorsally positioned to heart with density and appearance similar to the rumen. A dilation of the esophagus was reported and a diagnosis of megaesophagus was made. In conclusion, contrast esophagography must be included in the diagnosis of megaesophagus in goats.

Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation of oesophageal leiomyosarcoma in a dog Ciência Rural
Alves,Renata Cintra Ciccone; Batista,Tatiana Linardi; Laufer-Amorim,Renée; Elias,Fabiana; Calazans,Sabryna Gouveia; Fonseca-Alves,Carlos Eduardo.
Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle fibres that is infrequently reported in the literature. Because of the importance of definitive diagnosis and the low incidence of this tumour in dogs, it was reported a case of oesophageal leiomyosarcoma in a dog. A 13-year-old intact male Rottweiler presented regurgitation, hyporexia, and chronic weight loss. After an imaging examination, tumour in the thoracic oesophagus was suspected and a biopsy was sugested for definitive diagnosis. However, the owner did not permit the procedure. Six months after the clinical diagnosis, the patient was brought for evaluation of anorexia, apathy, and severe dyspnoea. Because of the patient's clinical signs and lack of response to emergency treatment,...

Endoscopic diagnosis and removal of esophageal foreign bodies in small animais. MV&Z
Corrêa, Valéria Pires.
Endoscopy was performed in sixteen animals, 14 dogs and two cats, with esophageal foreign bodies, referred to the Surgery Department of the School of Veterinary Medicine (University of São Paulo) and to a private diagnosis center in the city of São Paulo. The location, nature, texture and shape of the foreign bodies were assessed to determine the possibility of removal, as well as condition of the esophageal mucosa. Based on the results, it was concluded that esophageal endoscopy is a complement to the radiological diagnosis of foreign bodies. Their endoscopic removal was a practical and safe procedure, sometimes avoiding the need for a surgical intervention.

Esophageal Anatomy of the Llama (Lama glama) International Journal of Morphology
Sukon,Peerapol; Timm,Karen I; Valentine,Beth A.
This study describes gross, microscopic and muscle fiber anatomy of the esophagus of the llama, Lama glama. The esophagus was studied grossly in twenty-five adult llamas and a subset of ten with normal esophageal physiology was used for the microanatomic studies. Esophageal length was 122 ± 7 cm with two-thirds of the length in the neck and the remainder in the thorax, consistent with the long neck of the llama. Esophageal diameter increased steadily from 2.5 ± 0.3 cm in the cranial cervical region to 3.9 ± 0.8 cm in the caudal thoracic region. The mucosal epithelium was keratinized stratified squamous and there were abundant submucosal glands throughout the esophagus. The entire muscularis of the esophagus was striated muscle in two general layers but...

Esophageal ulcers caused by reactivation of ganglionary tuberculosis: a case report BJID
Hadlich,Everton; Galperim,Bruno; Rizzon,Carlos Fernando.
The involvement of the esophagus in tuberculosis (TB) is extremely rare. This is a case report of an immunocompetent male patient, who presented ganglionary TB reactivation, with the development of extensive esophageal ulcers. The endoscopic approach made the diagnosis possible and there was a total resolution of the symptoms after the treatment.

Expression of CYP2A3 mRNA and its regulation by 3-methylcholanthrene, pyrazole, and ß-ionone in rat tissues BJMBR
Robottom-Ferreira,A.B.; Aquino,S.R.; Queiroga,R.; Albano,R.M.; Ribeiro Pinto,L.F..
Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2A enzymes are involved in the metabolism of numerous drugs and hormones and activate different carcinogens. Human CYP2A6, mouse CYP2A5 and rat CYP2A3 are orthologous enzymes that present high similarity in their amino acid sequence and share substrate specificities. However, different from the human and mouse enzyme, CYP2A3 is not expressed in the rat liver. There are limited data about expression of CYP2A3 in extrahepatic tissues and its regulation by typical CYP inducers. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to analyze CYP2A3 mRNA expression in different rat tissues by RT-PCR, and to study the influence of 3-methylcholanthrene, pyrazole and ß-ionone treatment on its expression. Male Wistar rats were divided into four...

Feeding manipulation elicits different proliferative responses in the gastrointestinal tract of suckling and weanling rats BJMBR
Palanch,A.C.; Alvares,E.P..
Food deprivation has been found to stimulate cell proliferation in the gastric mucosa of suckling rats, whereas the weanling period has been reported to be unresponsive in terms of proliferative activity. In the present study we analyze regional differences in the effect of milk or food deprivation on cell proliferation of the epithelia of the esophagus and of five segments of small intestine in suckling, weanling and newly weaned Wistar rats of both sexes. DNA synthesis was determined using tritiated thymidine to obtain labeling indices (LI); crypt depth and villus height were also determined. Milk deprivation decreased LI by 50% in the esophagus (from 15 to 8.35%) and small intestine (from 40 to 20%) of 14-day-old rats. In 18-day-old rats, milk and food...

Histological Description of Morphogenesis of the Gastroesophageal Mucosa of Gallus gallus domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) International Journal of Morphology
Ventura,Adriana; do Nascimento,Aparecida Alves; dos Santos,Marcos Antônio José; Vieira-Lopes,Danielle Alcântara; Sales,Armando; Pinheiro,Nadja Lima.
The ontogenesis of the gastroesophageal mucosa involves morphological alterations related to its structure and the function of each segment. The present study describes the histogenesis of the mucus-secreting epithelium and glands of the esophagus, gizzard, and proventriculus of the chicken (Gallus gallus), and identifies alterations in the secretion pattern of glycosaminoglycans (GAG's). We analyzed 38 chicken embryos, processed the material collected following the histological routine, and then stained it with hematoxylin-eosin for the analysis of tissue structure and with Gomori's trichrome for the identification of conjunctive tissue and collagen fibers. We used the PAS histochemical technique for the analysis of neutral GAG's and the AB pH 2.5...

Morphological study of the gastrointestinal tract of the snow trout, Schizothorax esocinus (Actinopterygii: Cypriniformes) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bhat,Mohd Y.; Channa,Ashok; Paray,Bilal A.; Al-Sadoon,Mohammed K.; Rather,Irfan A..
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to investigate the macroscopic structure of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Schizothorax esocinus Heckel, 1838. The surface architecture of the buccopharynx, oesophagus and the entire intestinal tract of S. esocinus has been examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM) after fixing in 2.5% glutaraldehyde buffered with 0.1 M sodium cacodylate at pH 7.3 for 18-48 hours and post-fixation for two hours at room temperature in 1% osmium tetra oxide buffered at pH 7.3 with 0.1 M cacodylate. The mucosal surface of buccopharynx, esophagus, intestinal bulb, and intestine reveal prominent longitudinal major or primary mucosal folds which are further subdivided into the series of irregular and well-circumscribed folds called...
